Shakespeare was not the only one: Charles Dickens (1812-1870) also tops the list of the greatest writers in London. Going through the places that appear in A Christmas Carol, one of his most popular novels, is the perfect excuse to visit this city during the month of December.

London was always Dickens’s muse. Here he wrote Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, and also created Mr Scrooge, the stingy moneylender who hates Christmas. This character, main protagonist of A Christmas Carol, receives the visit of the 3 spirits of Christmas while he sleeps.

Mr Scrooge lives in Cornhill Street. From this point, he can see the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral and other settings of the tale. In the cemetery of this cathedral, Scrooge change his attitude when he visits his own grave. On the other hand, the sound of the bells of St. Dunstan tower wakes him up and allows him to live a new life. With this novel, Dickens popularized the expression “Merry Christmas” to wish happy holidays.

If you are interested in knowing more about the life of Charles Dickens in London, you can visit the writer’s museum, located at number 48 of Doughty Street. Furthermore, you can visit the Poet’s Corner, in Westminster Abbey, where he rests with other great poets.
